How might we divert waste from residential construction and re-incorporate it into someone's life to make them aware of the issue of construction inefficiencies?

  • 30% Of building materials delivered to a construction site can end up as waste

  • Annual construction waste is expected to reach 2.2 Billion Tons globally by 2025

  • Construction projects dump nearly 150 million tons of waste into the landfill annually

Project Overview

  • Create a product for Firefly Market in Boulder, CO

  • Materials used must be recycled/upcycled

  • Work in a team of 3 on a tight time constraint

  • Create 12 units for purchase

Materials Used

The Pepper Mill

The Pepper Mill is crafted from off-cuts of high-quality cabinets, resulting in a diverse range of woods being used. All the wood was generously donated by a local cabinet maker.

Each off-cut was milled into a workable shape and then glued together. Once formed into a block, it was shaped into its iconic triangular form and bored out to house the grinding mechanism and peppercorns.

The Terrazzo Base

The Terrazzo Base is crafted from half-used bags of mortar, glass, and crushed tile, giving new life to materials that would otherwise be discarded.

These materials were mixed and poured into a silicone mold. Once the mortar was set, the sides were sanded down to expose the diverse materials, creating a unique look for each base.
